Managers Response to Tariff Crisis: Unity, Autonomy, and a Stronger Europe

In the wake of the renewed global trade tensions triggered by the Trump administration’s decision to escalate tariff measures, European leaders and managers show their readiness to protect the continent’s economic and social model.

As the European social partner representing leaders and managers across Europe, CEC European Managers issues a firm call to action through its latest manifesto: “For a Stronger, Fairer and More United Europe in Times of Global Tensions”.

Amid growing uncertainty, Maxime Legrand, President of CEC European Managers, states:

“We are witnessing a dangerous shift in global trade relations, where the decisions of a small group—or even a single individual—can disrupt the global economy. We must accelerate our path towards our strategic autonomy.”

Legrand described the U.S. administration’s move as a “terrible decision”, warning of its potential impact on European employment and purchasing power.

“It is more crucial than ever to defend our social model. We must improve access to the labour market—particularly for young people, women, and senior workers, who remain disproportionately affected by unemployment”

However, he remains an optimist:

“The current situation could also be an opportunity to rebuild our industry and increase our employment rates.”

Manifesto: Leaders and Managers for European Resilience

In its ten-point manifesto, CEC European Managers calls on European institutions and national governments to reinforce Social Dialogue mechanisms, defend and modernise Europe’s unique social model, strengthen strategic sectors, and accelerate the Union of Skills, promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion as drivers of innovation and call for an Extraordinary Social Partners Summit with the EU to address industrial and employment consequences of global decisions.

“Managers need to adapt,” Legrand emphasized. “This is a wonderful wake-up call for the EU. We need to speed up our autonomy process.”

Managers’ vital role as “bridge builders” requires the EU to act as one and implement a strong, unified response to international challenges.

“Global problems require global solutions, and trade wars show the limits of fragmented responses.”

Standing with Workers: CEC Endorses ETUC Position

CEC European Managers has publicly endorsed the European Trade Union Confederation’s (ETUC) manifesto “No Day of Liberation for Workers,” aligning with its vision for a fairer, more social Europe.

Legrand reiterated this commitment:

“We call for an extraordinary social partners summit with the EU institutions to consider the consequences of the decisions taken in industry, jobs, and purchase power—so that social partners get information on the next steps.”

A Message to European Managers: Stay Strong, Stay Vigilant

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, CEC European Managers is encouraging all leaders to remain calm, resilient, and ready:

“The best advice is to stay vigilant and prepare to take action. Lots of things will be organised at a sectoral level,” said Legrand.

“The overall reaction to this situation will be taken at a European level. Stay tuned to your national and sectoral organisation and CEC European Managers for updates”

In closing, CEC European Managers assures its community of managers that it remains committed to providing first-hand information from the European Commission and EU institutions, and will deliver it without delay.

“In these times of uncertainty, we will lead with purpose,” Legrand said.
