“Vision, innovation, and ambition are just as crucial in business as in the arts”

The Slovenian Managers’ Association, our member organisation in this country, recently published a column highlighting the intersection of artistic excellence and visionary leadership.

The piece, written by Danilo Rošker, Director of the Slovenian National Theatre Maribor (SNG Maribor), emphasizes the theatre’s commitment to innovation, global recognition, and the crucial link between the arts and the economy.

Rošker outlines SNG Maribor’s core philosophy: Endeavor – Development – Breakthrough. According to him, success in today’s cultural landscape requires more than just talent—it demands a relentless pursuit of excellence. This principle drives every project undertaken by the institution, pushing creative and organizational boundaries to secure Slovenia’s position on the world stage.

A recent example of this ambition is the ballet premiere of Cluster, choreographed by Edward Clug, an internationally acclaimed artist known for blending classical and contemporary dance.

The performance features three of Clug’s works—Proof, Mutual Comfort, and Cluster—originally created for Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), one of the most prestigious dance institutions in the world.

The selection of these pieces underscores SNG Maribor’s dedication to presenting high-caliber performances that captivate both local and international audiences.

Beyond the realm of performing arts, Rošker also stresses the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Vision, innovation, and ambition are just as crucial in business as in the arts.

The column emphasizes the mutual benefits of stronger ties between the cultural, economic, and educational sectors, with sustainable development hinging on these partnerships. Encouragingly, many Slovenian business leaders have already recognized this connection, stepping forward as sponsors and donors to support the theatre’s mission.

The qualities that define artistic breakthroughs—boldness, strategic thinking, and a commitment to excellence—are the same principles that drive success in leadership and management.

By bridging the gap between culture and business, Rošker is shaping the future of the performing arts and setting an example of how visionary leadership can drive success across industries, also in the cultural sector.
